random

Well, time for an update. It's been raining the past few days and everything is so green - wonderful!!

The pic below is of some mild Feta cheese aging. . . for a day! It is really good and pretty simple. If anyone wants the recipe, let me know.

The two pictures below show a job that needs to be done. . . shearing the llamas! We'll see how it goes, I think it might be a bit stressful for the llamas just because of the fact that the are not super friendly. But, it has to be done, especially with the humidity here in Oklahoma, we don't want anyone to get heat stress! I have to pick up some Fiskars from Walmart. I think I am just going to do a scissor cut instead of using clippers, as I am sure they would be scared of them! It probably won't be a very pretty hair cut, but, we'll see.

Peppercorn,

Salty,

And I thought the picture below was funny of all the does napping ;),

Oh, and I wanted to mention - we should be getting some more of that really nice hay in here within the next couple of weeks. SO, if you have not joined the Northeast Oklahoma Hay and Feed Coop, come on and join it!

Have a great day!

I can't imagine giving a llama a hair cut. It must be a really big job! The photo of the does napping is really cute. They look very relaxed.

The fresh feta looks good too. I have a batch in the fridge aging too. I usually age it for almost a week. I love its texture and flavor at that time. Yumm!

Hey Brenda, if you wouldn't mind. . . could you give me your feta cheese recipe?

This recipe that I am using, drain, etc and then put it in a glass pan, cover it in a ton of salt, set it on the counter and let it sit there for 24 hours, drain the liquid, salt it again, let it sit for 2 more hours and then it's done. It's really good, but I am willing to try another recipe! Thanks!

You are my go to girl for help now, mainly because I really think you do such a marvelous job with sooo many beautiful goats!!!

I cannot get my new mama to let down for me. She gives me about 1/4-1 cup and then stops. I try rubbing and bumping and talking and singing. But nothing seems to help. Do you have any suggestions that will get her to share with me? The kids are now 3 wks old and are getting plenty. They are growing leaps and bounds quite literally as you know!

Thanks so much.

Diane, no problem! If you ever need a quicker response from me, you may be able to get ahold of me faster by directly emailing me - sf@goodgoats.net

Well, have you ever milked this doe before? Do you know if she is a "good" milker or not?
Have you been separating the kids at night? If not, they are plenty old enough to separate them every night and then milk your girl in the morning before letting them back together.
The most likely thing is that she is holding her milk back for her babies. In that case, I would just keep separating the babies every day and milking her. She should get the hang of things pretty soon.

Let me know if I can help you more!

Thanks Suriyah! (love your name by the way!!)

This is Ginger's first freshening. I don't know her history. When she does let me milk she's quit good. But once she has her mind made up that she's finished....well, she's finished. She gave me over a pint this morning and there is still plenty. I will start to separate at night. I'm guessing there will be lots of crying!!!

My only hope is that with time she will surrender!

If she is kicking at you, then just keep your hand on her udder till she calms down, take your hand off, and start over. She'll learn, most likely quickly!
